Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish & School was founded in November of 1948. In September of 1955, the Parish opened its grade school. In November 1988, the present church building was dedicated. Our parish boasts of wonderful parishioners dedicated to helping the needy wherever they may be, and of a marvelous K4-8 school with highly-certified staff, integrated student body, and computerized administrative and instructional operation. Most of all, ours is a parish of dedicated Christ-like people, living their Faith in their daily lives and attempting to bring the Love and Forgiveness of Our Lord to everyone around us each day. As we welcome you to this website, we extend that warm welcome to all the visitors to our parish. PARISH HISTORY

On November 13, 1947, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish became a legal entity.  Archbishop Moses Kiley appointed Father Joseph S. Swierczynski as the first pastor.  The original church design was in the form of a Quonset hut with a curved roof raised on its four walls. The first Mass was said “in the open air” because the windows, doors and other niceties were not yet constructed or completed.

October 1948 saw the birth of the Confraternity of Catholic Women and in the summer of 1949 OLQP presented its first festival.  The construction of the school began in 1954 and in September 1955 the school officially opened.  Enrollment was 280 and was taught by the School Sisters of St. Francis.

A new rectory and school expansion took place from 1955 thru 1965.  The 1960’s was a decade of the OLQP Fish Fry later replaced by Bingo in the early 1970’s.

In May 1987, Archbishop Weakland gave the parish permission to begin planning for a new church.  The plans were approved in September of 1987 and construction began.  The new church was dedicated on November 17, 1988.  In September 1989, the old church was converted into a gym and extended care facility.

Since November 1948 tremendous growth and change has taken place within the community.  Our Lady Queen of Peace has become a vibrant and diverse urban Catholic parish rooted in Christ’s gospel and Catholic tradition.

We the people of Our Lady Queen of Peace, being a diverse urban parish, are rooted in Christ’s gospel and Catholic tradition.

We strive to build a community of faith through education, worship and evangelization.  We are called to carry on Christ’s ministry to our brothers and sisters, especially the sick and their families, the elderly and the youth.

With Mary as our example of unconditional love, we strive to welcome everyone to share joyfully the peace, love and salvation of Jesus Christ.

PARISH RECTORY

All parish offices are located in the Parish Rectory, 3222 South 29th Street.  Rectory hours are Monday thru Friday 9:00AM to 4:00PM.  Appointments are requested during business hours and are required for after hours or weekends.  Rectory phones are answered with an automated message which includes forwarding instructions. 

PARISH MEMBERSHIP

All Catholic adults, 18 and older, living on their own or with their parents, who regularly participate in the liturgy are asked to register in the parish.  To register, contact the rectory office during normal business hours.  Registration is required for reception of the sacraments, attendance in our school or for Christian Formation programs.  If you are moving or leaving the parish, we ask that you notify the parish office to avoid duplicate or wasted mailings.
