Computers (all grades) Computer Lab As always the Computer Lab is hopping with activity. Each week the students have scheduled time in the lab for a class, keyboarding or Math review in the younger grades. Our scheduled class times in the Lab are primarily for projects which relate to the classroom curriculum. We use a variety of programs, such as: Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Kidspiration, Kid Pix, Type to Learn, and Paint. It’s amazing sometimes to see how comfortable the students are to try new things to make their documents more interesting and understandable. In addition, we have access to the Internet with all the Lab computers and the filtering that goes along with keeping us safe. In addition to the scheduled class times, we have a separate time for learning keyboarding. All the students are on a program which teaches the proper posture, hand placement, key location and best of all eyes on the screen and elbows off the tables. I have a lot in common with parents at a dinner table in that class, calling out reminders to sit up straight and keep your elbows off the table. Our younger students work on two Math programs which work on basic skills and yet challenge them to continue to grow in their learning. Online Math games or keyboarding games are used occasionally in other classes when a student may finish their work early. Many of our textbooks also have web sites for additional information on the topics for each grade level and subject. Students are also in the Lab to do research or work on a project for another classroom. I, or another teacher, am always available to assist a student in the Lab with whatever they may need for their project. In addition to a classroom full of wonderful computers, several flat screens, we also have two printers and can now do many things in color. Come stop in the lab and see all that’s happening.
